Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between the diagnosis of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) before their incarceration and the diagnosis of depression received during incarceration among inmates (PPL) from all penitentiaries in Peru. Methods: We carried out a secondary data analysis of the National Penitentiary Census in Peru (2016). We included people over the age of 18 and under 60 years old. We classified patients as having DM before incarceration and not having DM and evaluated the diagnosis of depression during imprisonment. Exploratory, we estimated the crude risk ratio (RR) and the adjusted RR by epidemiological (RRa1) and statistical criteria (RRa2) using lineal generalized models Poisson Family. Results: We analyzed 65 731 PPL, 814 (1,24%) had DM at the baseline and 973 (1.48%) were diagnosed with depression during imprisonment. The cumulative incidences of depression were 4.18% and 1.45% in people with DM and non-DM people, respectively. DM increased the risk of depression in the unadjusted model [RR: 2,89; (IC 95%: 2,06 – 4,04)]. This association was kept in epidemiological model [RRa1: 1,68 (IC 95%: IC 1,19 – 2,34)] adjusted by age, sex, hypertension, marital state, and abuse of substances, and in the statistical model [RRa2: 1,6 (IC 95%: 1,14 - 2,24)] adjusted by age, sex, marital state, type of insurance, hypertension, HIV infection, sexually transmitted infection, pulmonary disease, hepatitis, anxiety, and substance abuse. Conclusion: Diabetes mellitus prior to admission to prison increased the probability of a diagnosis of depression during the period of imprisonment.
