Insurance is a risk prevention mechanism that helps reduce the volatility of household income in the face of some idiosyncratic shock such as theft, accidents, illnesses, among others, which negatively affect the well-being of the household by reducing its income and/or increasing health spending if it is not treated on time. Idiosyncratic shocks being a determining factor in the demand for insurance, the financial level of families plays an impartial role in their decision to purchase insurance. The objective of the research is to determine the influence on the decision to acquire health insurance in 2019 in the presence of some idiosyncratic shock to health in the last 5, 3 or 2 years. To carry out this research, data belonging to the National Household Survey (ENAHO) was extracted, which will cover the periods from 2015 to 2019. In the analysis of the results using a Probit regression model, it was found that those individuals who perceived some type of idiosyncratic shock to health (symptom or discomfort, disease, relapse in chronic disease or accident) had a positive and significant impact on the Obtaining health insurance in 2019 accepting the research hypothesis. Likewise, having a higher level of income, education and that the individual lives in an urban area, the status of informality, gender and marital status are significant variables for obtaining health insurance in 2019.
