The first objective of the research was to determine the relationship between time perspective and personality traits in university students. In addition, the second objective was to correlate personality traits with the Balanced Temporal Perspective (BTP) profile. The sample consisted of 163 university students (52.1% men) between 18 and 40 years old (M = 21.1; SD = 3.56). The instruments used were the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory and the Big Five Inventory. From the results, direct and large magnitude correlations were obtained between Future with the Responsibility trait (rs = .58), and moderate between Negative Past with the Neuroticism trait (rs = .45). The second objective was obtained that the traits of Openness, Conscientiousness, Extroversion and Agreeableness are related negatively to the BTP deviation, although with low magnitudes. In conclusion, the Responsibility trait fosters the Future and Neuroticism fosters the Negative Past in university students, which implies better or worse academic and professional performance depending on the time perspective they are focused on. Finally, promoting BTP through personality is not enough, even so, their mutual influence could be a predictor if the four mentioned traits are taken into account together.
