Introduction: Since the media turned out to be an ideal of slim beauty, adolescents, especially of the female sex, have been influenced by said ideal body prototype. As a result, their perception of their body image is distorted, which leads to their eating practices being altered by fear of gaining weight. Objective: To explore how the perception of body image influences eating practices in adolescent women between 18 and 19 years of age at the Peruvian University of Applied Sciences, Villa headquarters. Materials and methods: Qualitative study that is based on the grounded theory method for the analysis of information. The sample consisted of 14 volunteer students from the Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas (UPC) Villa headquarters for in-depth interviews and 10 students for a focus group. Weight, height and Body Mass Index (BMI) were determined. Likewise, a graphic scale created and validated by Spanish researchers was applied in order to see the concordance between body perception and BMI. Results: The majority of adolescents had a perception of their body image consistent with their BMI. Despite this, they felt dissatisfied with their body due to the influence of both the media, and the family and social environment, which resulted in the search for restrictive diets. Conclusions: A real perception of body image in adolescents may imply body dissatisfaction and therefore, modifications in their eating practices.
