Introduction/objectives: Previous studies reported inconsistent associations between age at menarche and Body Mass Index (BMI). The aim of the present was to examine this relationship among college students. Materials and methods: The participants included 309 women between 18 to 30 years old from a private university in Lima, Peru, from 2018 to 2019. Observational transversal analytic study where the age at menarche was obtained by self-reports and the BMI was measured by the researchers. A multiple linear regression analysis was used to assess the association between age at menarche and BMI adjusted for its possible confounders. Results: The mean age at menarche was 12 ± 1.4. Overweight and obesity were found among 26.8% and 5.5% of the participants, respectively. No significant correlation was found between the age at menarche and the BMI. (Rho= -0.08; 95% confidence interval [CI] -0.19 to 0.03; p=0.165) In the adjusted model by age, physical activity and fruit and vegetable consumption, the age at menarche was inversely associated with the BMI in a significant manner. (coefficient β: -0.29, IC 95% -0.57 to 0.01; p=0.042) Conclusions: Earlier menarche was significantly associated with a greater BMI in college students.
