The objective of this research is to find the effect of two obstacles: the perception of access to finance and the perception of informality on the development of SMEs as measured by the growth of permanent employees. For this purpose, information from the World Bank of the Enterprise Survey surveys was used for five countries in the Latin American region: Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Perú and Uruguay, which are characterized by being developing economies of similar incomes, but with high rates of informality. Estimates were found through a weighted least squares model for 2006 and 2010. In addition, to carry out the weighting, the bias of heterocedasticity and autocorrelation of errors was identified and corrected by the use of a model variable that connotes the permanence of companies in the countries assessed: Age. The findings indicate that as the perception of informal competition increases the effect on the development of SMEs becomes more negative and can reduce the permanent employment of the company by up to 8%. As for the restriction of access to financing, it is not significant but is relevant in the explanation of the dependent variable.
