Aims: Sarcopenia is widely spread throughout the world. The prevalence of this, in people over 60 years old, is 5-13%, and increases to 50.0% in people over 80 years old. The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between sarcopenia and mortality in people aged 60 years old and older in a Callao hospital between 2010 and 2015. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted in the outpatient service of the geriatric service of the Naval Medical Center “Cirujano Mayor Santiago Tavara“ from 2010 to 2015. Mortality was defined with the report of death and sarcopenia was defined under the criteria of the European Consensus of Sarcopenia. For the bivariate analysis Log Rank tests were used and the multivariate analysis was performed through a Cox regression model. Results: Out of a total of 1447 participant recruited 59.16% were men with an average age of 82.81 ± 8.99 years. The prevalence of sarcopenia was 16.62%. The mortality rate, in the 1st year, was 2.21% and in the 2nd year it was 5.39%. In the bivariate model, a higher prevalence of sarcopenic mortality was found in the 2nd year compared to the 1st year. Finally, in the multivariate model, we found a higher risk of dying at 2 years HR 4.21 (95% CI 2.69 – 6.57) compared with the risk of dying at one-year HR 4.95 (95% CI 2.47-7.76). Conclusions: Sarcopenia has a high prevalence in the elderly. In our study, we found that there is a relationship between sarcopenia and mortality. In addition, we found an association between sarcopenia and, male and advanced age, this can be explained by degenerative changes in skeletal muscle. Two-year follow-up shows a greater association between mortality and sarcopenia than the one-year follow-up.
