OBJECTIVES: To determine if the surgical APGAR score (SAS) is effective in predicting outcomes (morbidity and mortality) in patients older than 64 years of age who go to emergency abdominal surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An observational, analytical cross-sectional study was conducted at the Hospital Belen de Trujillo from August to November 2018, evaluating a total of 126 patients. RESULTS: The prevalence of complications was 7.94% and death was 0.79%. Bivariate analysis identified ASA, HTA, 2DM, operative time and SAS score associated with the presence of complications. The SAS score was lower in the group with complications (5.50 ± 0.71 vs 7.03 ± 0.77; p < 0.001). Multivariate analysis identified the presence of 2DM and SAS score as part of the prediction model for the presence of complications, where the area under the curve was 0.70; 95% CI [0.49 - 0.91]. CONCLUSIONS: The SAS score independently and as part of a predictive model is associated with the presence of complications in elderly patients undergoing emergency abdominal surgery and should be considered in clinical practice.
