Objective: To determine the relationship between the intake of non-alcoholic sugary drinks and the Body Mass Index in adolescents of the 4th year of the I.E. Republic of Panama, 2019. Material and methods: A single-experimental pre-experimental study was carried out, same control group in which 31 obese patients from 10 to 12 years of age were included according to selection criteria; in whom the body mass index and the intake of non-alcoholic sugary drinks were evaluated; applying the ANOVA, and the chi-square statistical test. Results: Intake of non-alcoholic sugary drinks are associated with higher body mass index value in obese adolescents (p >0.05); without significant differences in terms of sex or age. The frequency of obese adolescents who were exposed to intake of sugary drinks greater than 250 ml; decreased significantly from 77.4% before the educational intervention to 22.6% after the intervention (p <0.01). The frequency of obese adolescents who reduced their overweight body mass index was 53.8% in the group with decreased intake of non-alcoholic sugary drinks and 5.6% in the group without decrease in nonalcoholic sugary drinks (p <0.01). The average body mass index prior to the educational intervention to reduce the intake of non-alcoholic sugary drinks was 26 and after the intervention was 25.6 (p >0.05). Conclusion: There is a relationship between the intake of non-alcoholic sugary drinks and the Body Mass Index in adolescents of the 4th year of the I.E. Republic of Panama, 2019.
