Objective: To determine the association between decreased visual acuity and poor school performance among schoolchildren of the Mario Vargas Llosa Rural Primary School during 2019. Methodology: Observational, analytical, cross-sectional and prospective study. Information was collected by means of a collection form, visual acuity alterations were screened with a Snellen chart and evaluation of refractive errors with an autorefractometer. Statistical analysis was performed in Stata 15. Results: A total of 199 elementary school students were surveyed. Of the students, 9.05% had impaired visual acuity (7.54% mild and 1.51% moderate). Academic performance was not associated with sex or ophthalmologic symptoms. However, an association was found between inadequate academic performance and age 10-11 years (p=0.041), 12-14 years (p=<0.001), myopia (p=0.047) and hyperopia (p=<0.001). In addition, 4.02% presented myopia, 1.01% astigmatism and 0.5% hyperopia. The most prevalent ophthalmologic symptoms were visual fatigue and headache with 39.2% respectively. Conclusion: The presence of decreased visual acuity and its associated forms of presentation (myopia, hipermetropia and astigmatism) were associated with poor academic performance among the students included in the study.
