Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of cervical cytology and colposcopy as early detection tests for cervical cancer. Material and methods: A retrospective study of diagnostic tests was carried out in which 173 patients underwent conization by the electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) in the period from january 2016 to December 2018. The cut-off point was moderate dysplasia, and a positive result was considered equal or greater than this. The area under the curve, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value for cytology and colposcopy were calculated. Results: The diagnostic correlation of early cervical cancer of the colposcopy was 84% and was significantly higher than the diagnostic correlation of early cervical cancer of the cytology which was 60%. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of the cytology was 30%; 89%; 83% and 43% respectively; while the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of colposcopy was 72%; 92%; 94% and 68% respectively. Conclusion: Colposcopy is more effective than cytology for detection of cervical cancer.
