Objetive: Determine the risk factors for a positive Pap test at Hospital I La Esperanza. Material and Methods: An analytical, observational, retrospective case-control study was presented. The population of this study was made up of 399 women; which were divided into: 133 patients with a positive Pap test and 266 patients with a negative Pap test. Results: Multiparity (OR = 1.64 95% CI (1.01 – 2.65) with a P value = 0.003) and the history of multiple sexual partners (OR = 1.90 95% CI (1.25 – 2.89) with a P value = 0.003) were found to be risk factors for a positive Pap test. Blood group A (OR=0.76), history of sexually transmitted infections (OR=0.84), the early onset of sexual intercourse (OR=0.91) and smoking (OR= 1.95) they were not considered as risk factors for a positive Pap test, because they did not have statistical significance (p> 0.05). The intervening variables such as the use of oral contraceptives (0.000) and the family history of cancer (0.001) were associated with a positive Pap test (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The history of multiple sexual partners and multiparity are risk factors for positive Pap test in patients of hospital I La Esperanza.
