Introduction: In the extreme ages of life, maternal and perinatal complications and longer hospital stays may occur. Objective: The present study sought to analyze the association between maternal age and longer hospital stay in an Intensive Care Unit. Material and methods: Observational, analytical, cross-sectional study. 367 pregnant women who entered the intensive care unit at the Instituto Nacional Materno Perinatal participated. Medical records of pregnant women are reviewed, collecting obstetric, clinical and sociodemographic information. The prevalence ratios with their respective 95% CI were estimated using simple and multiple Poisson regression. Results: According to the degree of instruction, 65% had secondary, 21% primary; In addition, 73% were cohabitants. The number of previous pregnancies ranged from 0-8, the number of previous abortions ranged from 0-6. 60.49% presented hypertensive disorder of pregnancy, 27.79% with obstetric hemorrhage and 20.71% presented sepsis. The average adjusted ratio of hospital stay increases by 1.01 for each year of maternal age (p=0.010). Conclusions: In the study population, maternal age was associated with a longer hospital stay in the Intensive Care Unit; regardless of marital status, number of previous pregnancies and number of previous abortions. The main causes of alteration in admission were hypertensive pregnancy, obstetric hemorrhage and sepsis.
