In order to determine the main etiological agents involved in canine otitis externa and to identify the associated factors, 59 patients with canine otitis externa were evaluated under the following inclusion criteria: symptoms compatible with otitis externa, of any age, sex and breed, without pharmacological treatment and with owners having signed the informed consent form. These were evaluated by means of otic cytology in both ears, proceeding then to evaluate the stained samples under the microscope. In the determination of the factors of canine otitis externa, a detailed data collection form was used as an instrument, considering the factors to be evaluated. The data obtained were processed by applying the Chi-square test and Fisher's exact test. It was found that the most frequent etiological agent was Malassezia spp. 79.7% (47/59). Statistical associations were determined (p= 0.042) between the primary factor of atopic dermatitis and the secondary factor cocci. The primary factor (foreign body) with the presence of bacilli in the cytology (p=0.026). Also, association between recurrent otitis and the primary factor Cushing's syndrome (p= 0.001). While the other factors evaluated did not present such statistical significance. It is concluded that the etiological agent of greater presentation is Malassezia spp. Likewise; these results had a statistical association between primary and secondary factors, except predisposing and perpetuating factors.
