Meloidogyne spp. (Root knot nematode) is one of the main phytosanitary problems of Piquillo pepper crop. The use of nematicides in crops is a widespread practice as a component of the integrated management of Meloidogyne and other phytoparasitic nematodes; However, this practice must be restricted due to the high toxicity of the products and their repercussions on the environment and the people who apply them. As an ecologically sustainable alternative, different types of microorganisms have been shown to have the potential to inhibit root nematode infection as well as promoting vegetative plant growth. In this work, the impact of nematophagous fungi on the reproduction of Meloidogyne spp inoculated in piquillo pepper seedlings under mesh house conditions was evaluated. Strains of Purpureocillium lilacinus, Pochonia chlamydosporia, Trichoderma harzianum and T. viridae were used. A chemical treatment (Vydate®), an absolute control and a control inoculated with nematodes were included. The results, measured as a function of the degree of nodulation in pepper roots, showed that all the fungi were effective, however the efficacy of the chemical treatment was higher. Most of the nematophagous generated a significant reduction of Meloidogyne eggs and juveniles by 5 g. root, with respect to the control inoculated with this nematode. Likewise, all nematophagous showed a promoting effect on root development, plant height and number of fruits per plant, which, in some cases, was greater than the chemical control. The results of this study show that Purpureocillium lilacinus, Pochonia chlamydosporia, Trichoderma harzianum and T. viridae, in addition to exercising effective control of Meloidogyne spp, promote root development and, therefore, a greater development of the plant as well as a greater number of fruits to the plant
