Objective: To determine if water overload is a risk factor for mortality in children with septic shock treated in the Pediatric Department of the Trujillo Regional Teaching Hospital 2013-2018. Material and methods: A retrospective, analytical and case-control study was carried out in which 88 children between 1 and 10 years of age with a diagnosis of septic shock were included, according to selection criteria which were divided into 2 groups: deceased or survivors; applying the odds ratio, and the chi-square statistical test. Results: In the bivariate analysis the frequency of hyperlactatemia, plaquetopenia, acute renal injury and hyperglycemia were significantly higher in the group of deceased children than in that of the survivors (p <0.05). The frequency of water overload in children with deceased septic shock was 61%. The frequency of water overload in surviving children with septic shock was 34%. Water overload is a risk factor for mortality in children with septic shock with an odds ratio of 3.1 which was significant (p <0.05). In the multivariate analysis, there are risk factors for mortality in children with septic shock to water overload, hyperlactatemia, platelet disease, acute renal injury and hyperglycemia.
