The present review was developed in order to know the protective effect of breastfeeding against urinary tract infections in children. Sources: A search was carried out in the different databases such as Pubmed / MEDLINE, BVS and Cochrane of the last 10 years, the search included review articles, systematic reviews, observational cohort studies, cases and controls written in English or Spanish. Including any age group of pediatric patients and upper or lower urinary tract infections. In addition, the official website of the World Health Organization was checked for additional references. The search was carried out during the month of August 2020, whose search expression was: (breastfeeding OR exclusive breastfeeding) AND (urinary tract infection OR urinary infection OR pyelonephritis OR urethritis OR cystitis) AND (children OR younger OR infants). Summary of findings: when conducting the respective search, we evidenced that few studies have been conducted on this topic. A total of 5 studies, 2 prospective cohorts and 3 case-control studies were included. We found no systematic reviews or review articles on the subject. Conclusions: Retrospective studies have shown that breastfeeding is a protective factor against urinary tract infections in children, in contrast those with a prospective design have failed to demonstrate a statistically significant association between both variables.
