To determine characteristics are the factors associated with low self-esteem in human medicine students from eight Latin American universities during the period October 2016 - February 2017. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional analytical study of secondary analysis will be developed; data from a primary study in students of human medicine (EMH) from eight Latin American countries, there were 2234 EMH October 2016 - February 2017, who met the criteria of selection. Two instruments were used: the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) and the Zung Self-Assessed Depression Scale. The data of interest (dependent variable was self-esteem and the independent variables were socio-academic factors, sexual behaviors, consumption of psychoactive substances and depression) from a database obtained from a primary study. Generalized linear models were performed to estimate prevalence ratios (PR), using the Poisson family, log link, and robust models. Results: Low self-esteem was present in 15.13% of the participants. The multivariate analysis identified not working (APR: 0.77; 95%CI: 0.60-0.98; p=0.036), country of residence (APR: 0.47; 95%CI: 0) as variables associated with low self-esteem. .22-0.99; p=0.049), having moderate-severe depression (RPa: 5.64; 95% CI: 3.71-8.59; p<0.001), consuming alcohol during the race (RPa: 0, 66, 95%CI: 0.53-0.81, p<0.001). Conclusions: We found that low self-esteem was associated with those who do not work the country of residence, those who had used drugs at some time during their studies, and those who had moderate depression - several in Latin American human medicine students. Thus, our study should serve to promote the execution of mental health prevention and promotion programs. Such an explosion would result in better academic and psychosocial results, thus avoiding risky behaviors that could harm both physically and mentally our students.
