Objective: To determine the effect of antiretroviral therapy on cognitive impairment in HIV patients treated at the unit of the Program for the Control of Sexually Transmitted Diseases and AIDS (PROCETS): Epidemiology - HBT in the year 2019-2020. Method: Quasi-experimental, prospective study; in which 42 patients with HIV who started antiretroviral treatment (ART) were followed for 12 months between December 2019 - March 2020 at the Hospital Belén de Trujillo, of which 2 patients were lost, so we worked with the The remaining 40 patients were given the Montreal cognitive assessment test (MoCa test) to assess whether or not there was cognitive impairment before starting ART and after 12 months of antiretroviral treatment, the results were subsequently compared and determined the effect of ART on cognitive impairment. For this, McNemar's statistical test was used. Results: 19 patients (47.5%) presented cognitive deterioration before starting ART, after 12 months of treatment the frequency of patients with cognitive deterioration decreased significantly to 11 (27.5%), p <0.021. Conclusion: Antiretroviral therapy decreases cognitive decline in HIV patients.
