At the beginning of this year, outbreaks of a new type of coronavirus identified as SARS-CoV-2 appeared, which causes COVID-19. This alert started in Wuhan, China and has now turned into a global pandemic. The gold standard in diagnosis is the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), which is important to prevent the spread of the disease, however, some patients have false negative results. Although RT-PCR is highly specific, it is less sensitive than chest CT (Computed Tomography) in the early stage of the disease. Chest CT is very useful in the early diagnosis of COVID-19, monitoring the clinical course and assessing the severity of the disease. Ground glass opacities with clear vascular margins, interstitial thickening, and consolidation are a great indication of COVID19, and the presence of extrapulmonary alterations suggests a state of severity in the patient. Based on a complete and detailed review of the current literature, the objective of this article is to analyze the utility of chest CT in COVID-19, to identify the specific characteristics of chest CT in patients with COVID-19, characteristic findings in the initial phase and in severe / critical condition. With this review it is hoped to consolidate the recognition of these characteristics by imaging specialists to make a quick and concise diagnosis.
