Objective: To identify previous cesarean section and other associated factors as risk factors for uterine rupture during pregnancy in patients of the Santa Rosa II-2 Hospital, Piura-Peru during the years 2010-2019. Methods: This is an analytical, observational, retrospective, case-control study. Our population consists of all the pregnant women in the obstetrics and gynecology ward of the Santa Rosa Hospital during the years 2010-2019. This study is based on those cases that fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Data was obtained and organized on a previously designed data recollection sheet. Afterwards the data was processed in Microsoft Excel and SSPS version 23.0. Results: This study included a total of 43 cases and 172 controls, with 16.2% (7 cases total) occurring in 2018 and 0.16% occurring within the last 5 years. We found that having a clinical history of cesarean section was associated with risk of uterine rupture (ORc: 1.8, IC 95%: 1.06-3.07), especially if the patient had 3 or more cesarean sections in her clinical history (ORa: 2.12, IC 95%: 1.02-4.42). We did not demonstrate an association between the use of uterotonic drugs, a clinical history of previous vaginal births or history of multiple births with uterine rupture. Conclusions: Clinical cases of uterine rupture in the Santa Rosa II-2 Hospital represented 0.16% of all births occurring at this hospital. We demonstrated that previous cesarean section doubled a patient’s risk of uterine rupture, particularly if the patient had more than 3 cesarean sections in the clinical background. For our study, certain risk factors such as the use of uterotonic drugs like ergot derivatives during the progression of labor, a clinical history of vaginal births and multiparity were not associated with uterine rupture.
