Objective: To determine if anemia is a risk factor for febrile seizures in children under 5 years of age at the Hospital Jorge Reategui - Piura. Material and methods: A retrospective case-control study was conducted involving 132 patients under 5 years of age, according to selection criteria, which were divided into two groups: patients with febrile seizures or patients without febrile seizures. To find association, Chi-square and T-Student statistical tests were applied, as well as bivariate and multivariate Poisson regression analysis to evaluate the degree of association by Odds Ratio (OR) and confidence interval. A p<0,05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The frequency of anemia in pediatric febrile seizure patients was 40%. The frequency of anemia in pediatric patients without febrile seizure was 18%. In bivariate analysis through logistic regression, the variables infant anemia (OR=3,1; IC95%: 1,7 – 4,9; p=0,024), prematurity (OR=2,9; IC95%: 1,5 – 5,1; p=0,029) and low birth weight (OR=2,8; IC95%: 1,6 – 5,3; p=0,035) are recognized as factors associated with febrile seizure. Anemia is a risk factor for febrile seizure in children younger than 5 years with an OR of 1,99; which was significant (IC95%: 1,29 – 3,08, p=0,002). Conclusion: Anemia is a risk factor for febrile seizures in children under 5 years of age at the Hospital Jorge Reategui - Piura.
