Objetive: Determine if excessive weight gain during pregnancy is a risk factor for pyelonephritis. Materials y methods: A retrospective case - control study including 147 pregnant patients who were treated in the January - June period of 2019 year at Albrecht Hospital. The population was divided into two groups according to the selection criteria: a group of 49 patients with pyelonephritis (group of cases) and the other group of 98 patients without this pathology (control group); the statistical analysis used were the odds ratio and the Chi square test. Results: In patients with pyelonephritis the frequency of excessive weight gain during pregnancy was 20.4%, in comparison with the control group in which the frequency of excessive weight gain during pregnancy was 23.5%. Excessive weight gain during pregnancy is not a risk factor for pyelonephritis with an Odds Ratio of 0.836, at the same time it has no statistical significance with the Chi square test (p = 0.675, p> 0.05) The regression logistics was performed to the multivariate analysis, which corroborates that excessive weight gain is not a risk factor for pyelonephritis. Conclusion: Excessive weight gain during pregnancy is not a risk factor for pyelonephritis in pacients of the Albrecht Hospital between January - June 2019 period.
