The objective of this study was to determine if type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is a risk factor for benign prostatic hyperplasia in patients at Hospital Belén de Trujillo. Materials and methods: A retrospective observational study of cases and controls was carried out in patients treated in the outpatient clinic of the urology service of the Hospital Belén de Trujillo, during the period 2015 to 2022. The diagnosis of benign prostatic hyperplasia was recorded, for later distinguish patients whose record reports a history of diabetes mellitus. Results: The study included a total of 292 patients. Of the patients without benign prostatic hyperplasia, 41.8% presented type 2 diabetes mellitus; and of the patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia, 39% presented type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus did not prove to be a risk factor for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (RR 0.89 95% CI 0.56 - 1.42), likewise the differences observed are not statistically significant to establish that DM2 is a risk factor for BPH (x2 0.228, Degree of freedom 1, Significance 0.633) Conclusions: Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, obesity and arterial hypertension are not risk factors for the development of benign prostatic hyperplasia in patients at the Belén de Trujillo hospital.
