Objetive: Determine if there is an association between serum calcium at admission and clinical severity of acute cerebral infarction. Methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was carried out. The sample consisted of 236 patients with acute cerebral infarction treated in the Emergency Service of Belen Hospital from Trujillo during 2014-2018. The level of serum calcium at admission was determined, and so was the clinical severity of acute cerebral infarction using the NIHSS scale. Gamma coefficient and Kendall's Tau-c coefficient were used to determine the association between both research variables. In addition, the Logistic Regression method was used to determine associations between cerebral infarct severity and covariates. (Elderly, Gender, Atrial fibrillation with high ventricular response, Uncontrolled blood preasure, Decompensated blood glucose, O2 desaturation and Fever). Results: 59.3% of the total patients had cerebral infarction of most important severity (NIHSS>15p); of which 76.4% had values of Serum calcium at admission less than 2.2 mmol/l. Kendall's Tau-c coefficient had a value of -0.56 and Gamma coefficient a value of -0.778, which are statistically significant at a level of 5%. Logistic Regression method only found statistically significant association for Atrial fibrillation with high ventricular response. Logistic model of serum calcium at admission, adjusted for covariates, provides 34.4% of the estimate of the severity of acute cerebral infarction. Conclusions: There is an association between serum calcium at admission and clinical severity of acute cerebral infarction; and this association is negative or inversely proportional, that is, at lower level of serum calcium then there is higher severity of cerebral infarction.
