To determine whether sleep time less than 6 hours per night is associated with a higher prevalence of upper respiratory infection in military recruits. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An observational, analytical, cross-sectional study was conducted at the Arica Fort in Tacna, evaluating a total of 453 military recruits during the months of October and December 2018. RESULTS: The prevalence of URI in the last 6 months in military recruits was 89.40%. In the bivariate analysis of sociodemographic and labor variables, it could be observed that there were no statistically significant differences between these characteristics and the presence of URI; the soldiers and having one year of service predominated in the recruits who had URI in comparison with those who did not have URI, although without statistical differences. 88.15% and 85.42% of those who attended with and without URI had a sleep time < 6 hours (p <0.05), although this did not have statistically significant differences. CONCLUSIONS: A greater proportion of sleep time < 6 hours was found in military recruits who had ARF in the last 6 months, although it was not statistically significant, we can consider it as a clinically relevant finding and should be considered in future studies.
