variables: obesidad, azotemia, hipercolesterolemia e hígado graso no
To determine if non-alcoholic fatty liver is a risk factor for diabetic retinopathy. Material and methods: An analytical, cases and controls study was carried out in which 148 patients diagnosed with diabetes mellitus were included, according to selection criteria which were divided according to the presence or absence of diabetic retinopathy, the chi square and the odds ratio statistician. Results: The frequency of obesity, azotemia and hypercholesterolemia were significantly higher in the group of patients with diabetic retinopathy (p<0.05); the frequency of non-alcoholic fatty liver in patients with diabetic retinopathy was 32/74 = 43%; the frequency of non alcoholic fatty liver in patients without diabetic retinopathy was 13/74 = 18%; non-alcoholic fatty liver is a risk factor for diabetic retinopathy with an odds ratio of 3.57 which was significant (p<0.05); In the multivariate analysis, the following variables were identified: obesity, azotemia, hypercholesterolemia and non-alcoholic fatty liver as risk factors for non-diabetic retinopathy. Conclusion: Non-alcoholic fatty liver is a risk factor for diabetic retinopathy.
