To determine the prevalence and if the age at menarche, the family history of dysmenorrhea, academic stress, and the consumption of coffee and cigarettes constitute risk factors for dysmenorrhea in medical students. Material and Methods: An observational, cross-sectional and descriptive study was carried out, the population was medical students from the Antenor Orrego Private University between 1st and 6th year, enrolled in the 2020-I semester, with a total of 219 participants, corresponding to approximately 34 students per year. A survey was applied to them using their own questionnaire model previously validated by a specialist doctor, to assess the presence of dysmenorrhea and the influence of some risk factors in the association with this pathology was analyzed. The Mann-Whitney U test was applied for quantitative variables and Pearson's Chi Square statistical test for qualitative variables. Results: Of 219 students, 195 (89%) reported having dysmenorrhea and 24 (11%) did not. The frequency of coffee consumption was 72.6%, the family history of dysmenorrhea was 59.4%, cigarette consumption was 13.2%, and the highest frequency was the presence of academic stress with 98.2%, in addition, the age range menarche was 10 to 12 years. The multivariate analysis showed that the variables under study such as age at menarche, coffee and cigarette consumption, family history of dysmenorrhea and the presence of academic stress did not present greater significance (p <0.05), that is, they do not influence or associate with dysmenorrhea. Conclusions: Dysmenorrhea is an important health problem in university students evaluated by high prevalence in our study, however, it is not significantly associated with any of the risk factors under study, contrary to what has been reported in various investigations in different countries around the world
