Objective: Determine whether the placenta previa is a risk factor for respiratory depression in the newborn at full term. Material and methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted during the period January 2010 to December 2018, with the help of the perinatal information system (SIP), an important database; the sample consisted of 90 pregnant women with placenta previa (cohort 1) and 90 pregnant women without placenta previa (cohort 2). The exclusion criteria were fetal malformations, antecedents of previous uterine surgeries and pregnant women with diagnosis of preterm delivery. Eight categories were defined and compared for maternal characteristics found in pregnant women with placenta previa. Risk factors for respiratory depression were analyzed for different groups using a stratified analysis. Results: The average maternal age of pregnant women with placenta previa was 29,84± 6,56 (p=0,130), 9 cases of respiratory depression were found, in the group of pregnant women with placenta (N=90) and 2 cases in the group without placenta previa (N=90) appreciating a difference significant (p=<0,05), the relative risk for respiratory depression was 4.50 (IC 95 % 1,00 - 20,25). With regard to the parity and weight of the newborn, relationship was found with the group of pregnant women with placenta previa with significant difference (p=<0,05). For the other characteristics there were no significant findings in the multivariate analysis as well. Conclusions: Placenta previa is a risk factor for respiratory depression in newborns at full term of the Belen de Trujillo Hospital. The incidence of newborns with respiratory depression 6.1%.
