To determine if there are differences in the frequency of complications between the primary anastomosis compared to the Hartmann procedure in the treatment of sigmoid volvulus in patients at the Víctor Ramos Guardia Hospital. Material and methods: An analytical, cohort, retrospective study was carried out. The population consisted of 102 patients with diagnosis of sigmoid volvulus who, according to selection criteria, were divided according to exposure to the Hartmann procedure or primary anastomosis. calculated the chi square and the relative risk statistician. Results: Complication rates do not show a significant difference between the two surgical techniques: primary anastomosis and the Hartmann procedure. The frequency of infection of the operative site was 15.7% in primary anastomosis and 21.6% in Hartmann's procedure, the frequency of acute respiratory failure was 11.8% in primary anastomosis and 13.7% in Hartmann's procedure, the frequency of sepsis to focus abdominal pain was 11.8% in primary anastomosis and 15.7% in Hartmann procedure, the frequency of paralytic ileus was 13.7% in primary anastomosis and 15.7 in Hartmann procedure, the mortality frequency was 9.8% in primary anastomosis and 11.8% In the Hartmann procedure, in addition to the primary anastomosis technique, the frequency of anastomosis dehiscence was 11.8% and in the colocutaneous fistula it was 7.8%; In the Hartmann procedure technique, the frequency of stoma necrosis was 13.7%. Conclusion: There was no significant difference in the frequency of comparable postoperative complications between the primary anastomosis and the Hartmann procedure.
