To determine if maternal urinary infection is a risk factor for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia in the Belén Hospital of Trujillo. Material and methods: A retrospective case-control study was carried out in which 258 neonatal registry cards were included, according to selection criteria, which were divided into 2 groups: patients with hyperbilirubinemia or without hyperbilirubinemia; applying the odds ratio, and the chi square statistical test. Results: The frequency of maternal urinary infection of the third trimester of pregnancy in neonates with hyperbilirubinemia was 36%. The frequency of maternal urinary infection in the third trimester of pregnancy in neonates without hyperbilirubinemia was 22%. Maternal urinary infection of the third trimester of pregnancy is a risk factor for hyperbilirubinemia with an odds ratio of 2.056 which was significant (p <0.05). In the multivariate analysis through logistic regression, the significance of the risk for the following variables is corroborated: maternal UTI, preeclampsia and use of oxytocin as risk factors for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. Conclusion: Maternal urinary infection is a risk factor for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia in the Belén Hospital of Trujillo.
