The objective of this study was to determine the effect of four row distances (40, 45, 50 and 55 cm) and three hill distances (20, 25 and 30 cm) on the grain yield of the yellow hard endospern maize parental inbred line CML 297. The experiment was conducted in the Fundo UPAO belonging to the Private University Antenor Orrego from Trujillo – Peru. Results showed a significant lineal response to row distances in grain yield (adjusted to 14% grain moisture) reaching 7.13 t/ha with rows 40 cm apart, which meant 80.5% more than that reached with 55 cm row width. Same response was for hill distances; thus, the distance of 20 cm, had the best grain yield with 5.4 t/ha on average. The highest grain yield was for the combination Row 40 x Hill 20 (125,000 plants/ha) with 7.46 t/ha. These high grain yields may be attributable to the high number of maize ears harvested and to the number of ears per plant (1.33 on average). Plant and ear height was significantly reduced as it also was the number of ears per plant with the lowest hill distance. There was no response to row distances and to hill distances for the basal and medium stalk diameter, number of rows per ears, number of grains per ear row, grain thickness and grain width.
