Objective: Determine the association between obesity in childhood and adolescence and the development of chronic kidney disease. Methods: Systematic review of primary studies that accomplish the inclusion and exclusion criteria of 6 databases. Two collaborators independently selected studies, extracted information, and assessed risk of bias. The risk of the tool was assessed using the Cochrane collaboration tool. The primary variables were obesity and chronic kidney disease, and the secondary variables were hypertension, albuminuria, and glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Results: An electronic search was carried out in the databases, obtaining a total of 2850 articles. The PRISMA selection diagram was followed (Figure 1). A total of 1646 duplicate articles were excluded, and of the remaining 1204, 1188 were eliminated by titles and abstract and that did not correspond to the design and did not answer the PICO question of the study. Of the remaining 16, the full text was analyzed and 11 articles were eliminated, whose characteristics are found in (Table 3). These 5 articles were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis. Conclusions: There was no statistically significant difference in blood pressure between obese and non-obese, in the presence or absence of microalbuminuria; as well as the mean GFR of both groups. The association between obesity and chronic kidney disease in children and adolescents is not clear.
