OBJECTIVE: Determine if preoperative urinary catheterization is associated with histological prostatitis in patients undergoing surgery for benign prostatic hyperplasia at the Urology Department of Belen Hospital in Trujillo, 2020-2022. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Observational, analytical cross-sectional study reviewing medical records of 136 patients diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia, who underwent surgery and have pathology results recorded. Data collected include prostate volume, PSA levels, IPSS, history of bladder catheterization for acute urinary retention, post-void residual, and results of digital rectal examination of the prostate. RESULTS: Of the patients, 108 were diagnosed with pure benign prostatic hyperplasia, and 28 with both prostatitis and benign prostatic hyperplasia. No statistical significance was observed between the two groups in parameters including prostate volume, post-void residual, and International Prostate Symptom Score. Patients with prostatitis had higher PSA values and a higher rate of preoperative vesical catheterization compared to those without prostatitis. Among the 28 patients with prostatitis, 25 (89.3%) had a history of vesical catheterization, while only 3 (10.7%) did not, resulting in a statistically significant difference between the two groups (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: There is an association between histological prostatitis and poorer outcomes regarding preoperative vesical catheterization and PSA, but not in relation to prostate volume, post-void residual, and IPSS variables in patients undergoing surgery for benign prostatic hyperplasia at the Urology Service of Hospital Belén de Trujillo, 2020-2022
