BACKGROUND Acute appendicitis remains the most common general surgical urgency seen in most hospitals and the most common cause of acute abdomen that requires surgical intervention. By leaving a drain in the peritoneal cavity in case of perforated appendicitis, intra-abdominal abscesses could form. OBJECTIVE. To determine the role of drainage in complicated acute appendicitis in the hospital Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes de Paita, April 2016 to April 2019. METHOD. Transverse, analytical, prospective, observational; following a design of cases and controls. RESULTS The use of enterocutaneous fistula DPR OR 0.28 95% 0.06-0.73 and p-value of 0.014 was found as associated variables. The type of appendicitis had OR 0.084, CI of 0.02-0.27 and the p value <0.001. CONCLUSION. The use of drainage is a safe way in the surgical management of complicated appendicitis.
