Objective: To determine if energy drinks consumption is associated with poor sleep quality in medical students. Material and methods: We conducted an observational, analytic, cross sectional study in medical students of Antenor Orrego Private University. There were 488 who accepted to participate, and after applying selection criteria, a sample of 310 students were randomly chosen. Those were asked a questionnaire, and then classified according to the presence of poor sleep quality. Subsequently, a bivariate analysis was performed with independent and intervening variables (daytime sleepiness, sex, gender) Results: 310 students were analyzed, finding a prevalence of poor sleep quality of 93%. In addition, the prevalence of energy drinks consumption and daytime sleepiness were 17% and 40% respectively. Average age at the group with poor sleep quality was 21.12 ± 3.08, while in the group without poor sleep quality was 20.48 ± 2.20. The predominant sex was female with 50.7%. After performing bivariate analysis, it was found that energy drinks consumption was no associated with poor sleep quality (p value=0.34); as neither did any of the other variables. Conclusions: Energy drinks consumption, age, gender and daytime sleepiness are not associated factors to poor sleep quality
