To determine if polypharmacy is a factor associated with chronic kidney disease in diabetic patients at the Víctor Lazarte Echegaray Hospital. Material and methods: An observational, analytical, retrospective study of cases and controls was carried out, which included 98 diabetic patients according to selection criteria, which were divided into 2 groups: patients with chronic kidney disease or without chronic kidney disease, applying the odds ratio, and the statistical chi square test. Results: The average age and the frequency of arterial hypertension, obesity and hypercholesterolemia were significantly higher in the group of patients with chronic kidney disease compared to the group without chronic kidney disease (p<0.05); the frequency of polypharmacy in diabetic patients with chronic kidney disease was 44%; the frequency of polypharmacy in diabetic patients without chronic kidney disease was 22%; Polypharmacy has the characteristic of being a factor associated with chronic kidney disease in diabetic patients with an odds ratio obtained of 2.81, which was significant, p<0.05; 95% CI, 1.4 – 5.6; in the multivariate analysis performed by logistic regression, the relevance of the risk for age OR, 2.1; 95% CI, 1.3 – 4.3; arterial hypertension, OR 2.4, 95% CI, 1.5 – 4.7; obesity OR, 2.7; 95% CI, 1.9 – 5.1, and hypercholesterolemia OR, 2.3; 95% CI, 1.6 – 4.8, as factors associated with chronic kidney disease in diabetic patients. Conclusion: Polypharmacy is a factor associated with chronic kidney disease in diabetic patients at the Víctor Lazarte Echegaray Hospital.
