Objective: Determinate if the knowledge of the Mellitus Diabetes type 2 is a risk factor for the diabetic infected foot at the Essalud Reategui Hospital in Piura between October 2017 and March 2018 Material and method: It took place an analytic, retrospective, observational and vertical study. The population was 328 patients and our sample was 142 patients with mellitus diabetes 2 divided in two groups: infected diabetic foot (26) and with non-infected diabetic foot (116), we obtain the odds ratio (OR) and chi-square test (χ2). Results: No significant differences were observed in respect of the sociodemographic varieties like age, gender, origin, education, nor the kind of treatment between patients with or without infected diabetic foot. The frequency of inadequate knowledge of the Mellitus Diabetes type 2 in patients with an infected foot was 18/26 = 69%, and the frequency of inadequate knowledge of the Mellitus Diabetes type 2 in patients with a non-infected foot was 39/116 = 33%. The level of inadequate knowledge of the Mellitus Diabetes type 2 is an associated factor to an infected foot with an odd ratio of 4.44 wich was significant (p<0.05). Conclusions: We can determinate that the level of inadequate knowledge in the patients with Mellitus Diabetes type 2 increase 4.44 times the risk of having an infected foot comparing with the patients that have an adequate knowledge of the decease at the Jorge Reategui Hospital in Piura between October 2017 and March 2018.
