Objective: To determine if atrial fibrillation is a risk factor for mortality in patients with decompensated Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in the Belén Hospital of Trujillo. Material and methods: An analytical, observational, retrospective, case and control study was carried out. The study population consisted of 225 patients with decompensated obstructive pulmonary disease from Hospital Belén de Trujillo - Peru; which were divided into 2 groups with decompensated chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (n = 75) or survivors (n = 150); the odds ratio and the chi square test were calculated, and the bivariate and multivariate logistic regression was applied. Results: Of a total of 225 patients, the average age in the group of patients with COPD who died was 61.5 years and survivors the average age was 52.7 years. In addition, the frequency of CHF in the group of patients also stood out in the study. with COPD deaths was 25% and in the group of survivors it was 10% respectively, which showed that both CHF and age were significantly higher in the group of patients with COPD than in patients with COPD survivors. The proportion of atrial fibrillation in deceased patients with decompensated Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease was 28%. The proportion of atrial fibrillation in surviving patients with decompensated Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease was 9%. Atrial fibrillation as a risk factor for mortality in patients with decompensated Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease with an odds ratio of 3.8 which was significant (p <0.05). In the multivariate analysis, atrial fibrillation can be reaffirmed with OR 3.4 and (CI: 95% [1.9; 5.8]) (p = 0.0056) and congestive heart failure with OR 2.8 (CI: 95% [1.6-4.9]) (p = 0.022) as associated risk factors for mortality in decompensated chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Conclusions: Atrial fibrillation is a risk factor for mortality in patients with decompensated chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in the Belén de Trujillo Hospital.
