OBJECTIVE: To determine if pregestational diabetes mellitus and chronic arterial hypertension are risk factors associated with preeclampsia. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A type, analytical, observational, retrospective, case and control study was carried out. The study population consisted of 609 pregnant women, who were divided into two groups, the cases: pregnant women with diagnosis of preeclampsia and controls: 5376 pregnant women without such diagnosis, both groups attended in the Obstetrics Service of the Regional Teaching Hospital of Trujillo in the period January 2014 to December 2016. RESULTS: The average maternal age in the case group was 26.71 years and in the control group it was 26.16 years. The average gestational age at delivery in patients with preeclampsia was 38 weeks. The frequency of pregestational diabetes mellitus in patients with preeclampsia was 0.33% and the frequency of chronic arterial hypertension in those patients was 1.81% in comparison with the frequency of DM in the group of controls that was 0.32 % and the frequency of HT in that group was 0.5%. A value of p = 0.96 was calculated for the DM and for chronic hypertension a value of p = 0.003, OR = 3,262, 95% CI = 1.504 - 7.075 CONCLUSIONS: pregestational diabetes mellitus is not a factor associated with preeclampsia; however chronic hypertension is identified as an associated factor that increases the risk of developing preeclampsia 3.26 times.
