Objective. To determine the associated factors for needle-stick injuries (LHA) in health workers at the Trujillo Regional Teaching Hospital between June and August 2016. Materials and methods. Analytical cross-sectional study in 354 health workers from different health care areas; which were distributed in two groups: 138 workers who had LHA and 216 did not have LHA. Each one of them was applied a questionnaire elaborated by the authors, which previously was validated obtaining a Cronbach's alpha of 0.74. Results: The mean age of workers who had NSI was 33.14 ± 11.10 and of those who did not have NSI was 41.53 ± 12.91 (p < 0.001); the 32.61% and 37.96% were males in the groups with and without NSI. The prevalence of NSI in the last year was 38.98%. The univariate analysis showed that the work department, age, work experience, hours of work / week, patients treated / day, re-capping needles after use and use of personal protective equipment were factors associated with NSI (p < 0,001) and the multivariate analysis after controlling for confounding variables showed that the factors associated with NSI were younger age, the area of work in critical surgical medical services, greater number of hours of work / week, greater number of patients treated by day, the NSI considered as avoidable and to re-cover the needles (p < 0,05). Conclusions: Almost two in five respondents experienced an LHA in the last year; there were practices and behaviors that put health workers at risk of LHA; It is necessary to improve prevention strategies.
