OBJECTIVE: To determine if early menarche is a risk factor for metabolic syndrome in the Carlos Lanfranco la Hoz Hospital, Puente Piedra - Lima. Between the period January and March 2018. MATERIAL AND METHOD: An observational, analytical study of cases and controls was conducted, which evaluated a total sample of 462 women treated in the Internal Medicine service of the Hospital Carlos Lanfranco la Hoz, Puente Piedra - Lima. During the period January and March 2018. The cases consisted of 231 women with a diagnosis of metabolic syndrome and controls by 231 women without this condition. RESULTS: In the bivariate analysis of clinical characteristics, association with the metabolic syndrome at age (35.21 ± 6.75 and 33.44 ± 6.39, P = 0.004), Multiparity (74.03) was demonstrated. 74,03% and 58.44%; ORc = 2.03 [1.37 3.01], (P = 0.001) and sedentary lifestyle (24.24% and 15.15%; ORc = 1.79 [1.12 2, 86], (P = 0.014). Also to early menarche and metabolic syndrome (15.58% and 8.66%; ORc = 1.95 [1.09-3.48], (P = 0.023). Multivariate logistic regression, using all the significant variables detected by univariate analysis and the outcome variable; establishes that the presence of metabolic syndrome was associated independently with age (ORa = 1.04 [1.01-1.07], P = 0.004), Multiparity (ORa = 2.01 [1.35-3, 01], (P = 0.001), sedentary lifestyle (ORa = 1.73 [1.07-2.81], P = 0.026) and early menarche (OR = 1.85 [1.02-3.35], (P = 0.042). CONCLUSIONS: Early menarche is an independent risk factor for metabolic syndrome. Multiparity was the independent risk factor of greatest strength to produce the disease.
