OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate the association between emotional intelligence and test anxiety in medical students. MATERIAL AND METHOD: An observational, analytical cross-sectional study was conducted, which evaluated 442 students of the medical school of the Universidad Privada Antenor Orrego de Trujillo, in the period May – June 2016. The students completed questionnaires with their general characteristics, the TMSS-24 test was used to evaluate emotional intelligence and the GTAI-AR questionnaire to assess the level of test anxiety. RESULTS: The prevalence of high test anxiety was 54.07%. A total of 239 students met the criteria of higher scores of test anxiety and formed the group of cases and 203 students formed the controls. The bivariate analysis identified the female gender (OR = 1.57, IC 95% [1.06 - 2.33], p = 0.023), obesity (p = 0.009) and the existence of emotional problems (OR = 1, 50, IC 95% [1.00-2.25], p = 0.048) to be associated with higher scores of test anxiety. Multivariate analysis identified the female gender and the lowest levels of emotional perception and emotional comprehension as factors independently associated with high levels of test anxiety. CONCLUSIONS: The female gender and the lower levels of emotional perception and emotional comprehension are factors independently associated with high test anxiety. These findings show potential factors that could be addressed through strategies that strengthen the emotional component of medical students.
