Objective: To determine what personal, family, academic and social factors are associated with alcohol consumption in medical students of the Antenor Orrego Private University. Material and Method: An observational, analytical, prospective study was carried out during January - February 2018. The sample consisted of 508 students surveyed. Results: In the bivariate analysis, age ≥21 years was presented in 62.6% of consumers of alcoholic beverages and in 53% without consumption (p = 0.03); the masculine gender was present in 51.3% and 40.9% respectively (p = 0.02); local origin was more frequent in non-consumers (64.2% vs. 54.9%, p = 0.02). The average age of onset in the consumers was significantly lower (15.8 ± 3.02 vs 16.9 ± 3.52, p = 0.000). The family situation showed a highly significant difference, with biparental being the most frequent in cases without consumption (47.0% versus 27.2%). The schooling of the parents showed no difference, while the academic year, the inadequate academic performance and the consumption between peers and friends did (p <0.01). In the multivariate analysis it was confirmed that only gender, permissiveness of parents, consumers in the family and inadequate academic performance showed significant statistical difference. Conclusions: Gender, permissiveness of parents, consumers in the family and inadequate academic performance are associated factors confirmed in the bivariate and multivariate analysis. It is suggested the promotion of family interaction activities, preservation of the family nucleus, dissemination of information about the study phenomenon and better habits of coexistence.
