Background: There is evidence that high hematocrit certifies the haemoconcentration of severe preeclampsia, which is useful for predicting this disease in pregnant women undergoing labor. Objective: To determine if high hematocrit is a predictive factor of severe preeclampsia in pregnant women treated in the Obstetrics and Gynecology department of Trujillo's Belen Hospital. Methods: An observational, retrospective, analytical case-control stud was carried out at Trujillo's Belen Hospital. The sample of the study population was 170 clinical histories of pregnant women according to inclusion and exclusion criteria, divided into two groups: 85 cases with severe preeclampsia and 85 controls without severe preeclampsia. Results: The frequency of high hematocrit in pregnant women with preeclampsia was 69.4%, on the other hand the frequency of high hematocrit in pregnant women without preeclampsia was 11.8% with an OR = 17, 95% CI 7.6 to 38, p = 0.001. The average ages of the pregnant women with preeclampsia were 25.7 + - (8.03) years and 22.9 + - (5.3) years respectively, finding a significant difference with a p = 0.008. Noting that the cases and controls for nulliparity were 52.9% and 35.3%; the history of personal and / or family preeclampsia was 25.9% and 10.6%; multiple pregnancy was 8.2% and 12.9%; diabetes mellitus was 4.7% and 21.2% and finally obesity was 8.2% and 20% respectively, finding a significant difference in all of them with p = 0.01. The hepatic insufficiency of pregnant women with and without preeclampsia was 24.7% and 27.1% respectively, finding a significant difference with p = 0.04. Noting that the cases and controls in thrombocytopenia were 16.5% and 9.4%; kidney failure was 7.1% and 36.5%; and finally the obesity was 8.2% and 20% respectively, finding in all of them a significant difference with a p = 0.01 Conclusions: Hematocrit greater than 36% as an indicator of haemoconcentration, is an accessible test and with predictive value, which makes it a useful test to screen pregnant women at high risk of severe preeclampsia.
