Some lines of evidence suggest that the parasitic load of Bartonella bacilliformis advantage the presentation of severe complications in Carrión´s disease during the acute phase, in order to give new lights to the observations, a retrospective study was conducted that link the clinical behavior with findings microbiological. OBJETIVES: To determine the effect of the parasitic load of Bartonella bacilliformis on erythrocytes about the development of severe complications in Carrión´s disease during the acute phase. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An observational, retrospective, analytical case-control study was carried out, information was obtained from the registry of metaxenics diseases of the Víctor Ramos Guardia Hospital - Huaraz, we worked with a total of 159 samples of peripheral sheet taken in the moment of the patient´s admission, and accomplished with the requirements for the analysis, it was distributed in 53 for the group of cases and 106 for the group of controls, the analysis statistical consisted in the validation of the association of both variables through the chi-square test (X2) was used by the odds ratio (OR) to measure the strength of association, in addition a correlational analysis was carried out and analysis of signal detection or predictability using the ROC curve. RESULTS: The total parasitic load had weak association for the best severe complications observed for shock, neurobartonellosis and death was analyzed with the chi-square (X2) For other side, the number of bacteria ≥ 10 was it proved to be associated with complications (X2 = 31.25 OR: 10.84 P < 0.05) and each of the variables studied (death: X2 = 58,181 ; ICC: X2 = 39; neurobartonellosis: X2 = 38.7, shock: X2= 43.2, sepsis: X2 = 64.7, BMD: X2 = 46.7, thrombocytopenia: X2 = 20.6). There was a more evident positive correlation in the parasitic load for each erythrocyte. The analysis of the ROC curve reflects the same pattern mentioned above. CONCLUSIONS: The effect of the parasitic load of Bartonella bacilliformis on the presentation of severe complications was found, being controversial when the load was analyzed parasitic total. In opposite way the parasitic load for each erythrocyte of Bartonella bacilliformis was strongly associated with the complications measured in this study.
