Objective: To establish if diabetes mellitus type 2 is a risk factor for dengue with warning signs. Material and methods: A retrospective, analytical study of cases and controls was conducted, which evaluated 71 cases with dengue with warning signs and 284 without warning signs, attended at the Jerusalem Hospital of La Esperanza district. Results: In the population characteristics, no statistical significance was identified. In comorbidities, diabetes mellitus type 2 was diagnosed in 1.7% of patients with dengue with alarm signs and in 1.4% of patients with dengue without warning signs with an OR = 5.15 (1.52 to 17.39 ) and a p = 0.010, while the other comorbidities such as hypertension and asthma do not show statistical significance. The multivariate analysis corroborated that diabetes mellitus is a risk factor with an OR = 5.16 (1.33-20.0) with a p = 0.017. Conclusions: The frequency of diabetes mellitus type 2 in patients with dengue with warning signs is higher than those who do have dengue with out alarm signs, with statistical differences. Diabetes mellitus has five times the risk of dengue with alarm signs compared to those without diabetes mellitus.
