OBJECTIVE: was to establish if under 5 years of age, sex, and the delay in seeking care are risk factors for in patients in the province of Trujillo in the period 2016 to 2017. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An observational, retrospective, analytical study of cases and controls was carried out, applied to a population constituted by 102 cases of chickenpox during the period 2016 - 2017, with a ratio of two controls for each case. The database of patients with chickenpox registered in the Trujillo Network was used. RESULTS: The frequency of less than 5 years in the complicated children was 61.8% and uncomplicated 39.7%, with no statistical difference (p = 0.029), with an OR of 2.45 and 95% of 1.05 to 5.71. Males predominated in complicated cases of chickenpox with 52.9% and the uncomplicated 45.6%, no statistical differences (p = 0.312), OR = 1 34 and 95 CI 0.59 to 3.09%, excluding there is Association as a risk factor. The delay of seven days of care was present at 17.6% of complicated cases of chickenpox and in 4.4% of uncomplicated cases of varicella with statistical differences (p = 0.036), with an OR = 4 64 with a 95% CI 1.08 to 19.89 Partnering seeking care over seven days as a risk factor for complications of chickenpox. CONCLUSIONS: The age less than five years, and the delay in seeking care the days of illness is associated as a risk factor for complicated chickenpox. While sex is not associated as a risk factor for complicated chickenpox.
