Objective: To determine if partial saphenectomy is more effective than total saphenectomy in patients with varicose vein surgery. Material and Methods: An retrospective cohort study was conducted. The population was 107 patients, they were operated by varicose veins in the Hospital Militar Central during January - December 2017; 43 patients were operated by partial saphenectomy and 56 by total saphenectomy. For the statistical analysis non parametric tests were used, establishing a significant association if p is less than 0.5. Results: The male sex represented 67%, the female 37%; The average age was 58 years. Significant differences were found between the presence of post-operative complications (OR: 0.06, 95% CI [0.01-0.22], p = 0.000), days of hospitalization (p = 0.001), which were higher in the case of total safenectomies. Likewise, those who underwent total safenectomies 31 (48.4%) had saphenous nerve injury as a complication (OR: 0.02, 95% CI [0.00 - 0.19], p = 0.000). No significant differences were found regarding clinical improvement by type of surgical technique. Conclusions: Partial saphenectomy offers a greater effectiveness compared to total saphenectomy, presenting similar results in terms of clinical improvement with a lower risk of saphenous nerve injury and a shorter postoperative hospital stay.
