OBJECTIVE: To determine the androgenic alopecia as a predictor of benign prostatic hyperplasia. MATERIAL AND METHODS: a retrospective analytical case-control study was conducted, of an observational type, with a total sample of 128 patients, 64 were cases and 64 controls, in the external office of the urology service of the ““Hospital Nacional Dos de Mayo ““. RESULTS: The mean age of the case group was 67.53 ± 8.68 years and controls 65.11 ± 9.72 years. Patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia have a significantly higher mean prostate volume (71.1406 ± 3.32 versus 17.30 ± 4.72) (p <0.05). In the bivariate analysis, a strong association between androgenic alopecia (AGA) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) was found (p <0.05), (OR: 4.556, 95% CI [2,159-9,613]). The logistic regression analysis found androgenic alopecia and arterial hypertension as independent factors related to benign prostatic hyperplasia (p <0.05). CONCLUSIONS: There is a relationship between androgenetic alopecia and benign prostatic hyperplasia, in this study it is proposed that the early onset of AGA is an early marker of BPH, due to its similar pathophysiology.
